In Vedic religion, he was one of the most respected and popular Gods. He is considered as the mouth of the goddesses and gods, and the medium which transports offerings to them in a homa. Therefore, we cannot reach any of the gods without him as a medium.

In the later Vedic period, Agni Dev became one of the Ashtadikpalas as Lord of the southeast quarter.

Furthermore, he is acknowledged to be the son of 10 mothers who are all sisters; these 10 mothers symbolizes the 10 fingers of man.

He is the lord of the house, dwelling in every abode. In addition, he is considered the protector, lord, and king of men. He lives in every family, he despises no man and he is a guest in every home. In the Brhaddevata (a metrical Sanskrit work) we find out that at one point, he is dismembered and distributed among earthly things.


According to the Vedic scriptures and Hindu mythology, he has 7 tongues, 3 legs, 2 faces, and 7 hands. 7 streams of glory radiate from his body and flames of fire issue from his mouth. Moreover, he wears a poita and has a garland of fruits.

He is usually depicted ever-young, that represents the fact that he is miraculously reborn daily by way of the friction of the 2 sticks. His vehicle is a goat.

Hayagriva, also referred to as Hayagreeva, is a horse-headed avatar of the Supreme Lord Vishnu – the maintainer of the universe and the complete cosmic creation. He is venerated as the God of Knowledge and Wisdom.

Moreover, he is a very important deity in the Vaishnava tradition (one of the principal traditions within Hinduism along with Shaktism, Shaivism, and Smartism).
