Hemorrhoids – Spiritual Causes, Meaning, Symptoms, Prevention

Hemorrhoids, also known as piles, are not veins or arteries but normal blood vessels (sinusoids) which are located at the junction where small arteries merge into veins.

Occasionally, hemorrhoids swell and their walls become thin, stretched, and irritated by passing stool. While they commonly go away in a few weeks on their own, they can actually cause severe discomfort.

Sometimes, a clot may form in the hemorrhoid. This type of blood clot is not dangerous and will not spread through the rest of the body, nevertheless, it can be extremely painful.

By age 50, about fifty percent of the United States population has experienced one or more of the classic signs and symptoms, that include rectal itching, pain, bleeding, and possibly prolapse.

Hemorrhoids can either be external and internal. Internal hemorrhoids cannot be felt (are located on the inside lining of the rectum) unless they prolapse and push through the anus opening causing discomfort and pain. However, internal hemorrhoids which are not prolapsed most commonly are not painful.

External hemorrhoids are under the skin around the anus, where there are many more pain-sensing nerves, therefore, they tend to hurt and bleed. Hygiene is crucial when dealing with external hemorrhoids because fecal matter must be kept from irritating the skin around the anus.

Causes

While the precise cause of this condition remains unknown, a variety of factors are believed to be involved, including:

Chronic Constipation 

Straining to move stool puts additional pressure on the blood vessels’ walls.

Low Fiber Diet

Leads to a smaller caliber stool as well as it causes individuals to strain when having a bowel movement. Ultimately, this increases the pressure within the blood vessels.

Being Obese or Overweight 

Obese and overweight people are more predisposed to this condition since they may drink less water, don’t get enough fiber-rich foods in their body, and they don’t do any physical activity.

Pregnancy

This condition is frequent during pregnancy due to the expanding uterus pushing against the anal cushions.  According to a study conducted in France, approximately 30% of pregnant women are affected in the third trimester. Plus, if the future mother had them before pregnancy, she is more likely to have them again now. However, it is temporary and commonly resolves itself after birth.

Frequent Heavy Lifting

When you push or lift something heavy, the strain can considerably increase the blood pressure in the veins of your rectum and anus.

Endocrine Disorders

These problems include adrenal insufficiency or an underactive thyroid and can negatively affect the function of the muscles of the rectum and colon.

Anal Intercourse

While there is no clear association between hemorrhoids and anal sex, it is thought that the act can cause friction which may lead to micro-tears of the rectum.

Symptoms

The main signs and symptoms include:

  • swelling around the anus;
  • blood in the stool;
  • lumps around or near the anus;
  • pain or discomfort, particularly when sitting;
  • itching around the rectal or anus area.

These symptoms show that you are facing problems that you have to put aside, that something holds you back, something you can not or do not want to release. Try to consciously look at what scares you and do it without fear.

Let the challenge pass without condemning yourself. As long as you can accept the challenge you are experiencing, you will feel the light and an open heart, capable of living here and now.

Prevention

Physical Exercise

Sitting or standing for long stretches puts excessive weight on the veins. On the other hand, physical exercise enables stool to travel through the inside, thus, the defecation process becomes easier.

It is recommended to do vigorous activity at least 1¼ hours per week or moderate physical exercise at least 2½ hours every 7 days.

Don’t Delay

When you feel the urge, go to the bathroom as fast as you can, since putting off bowel movements can increase the chance of constipation, that aggravates this condition.

Don’t Sit On The Toilet For Prolonged Periods

Don’t stay sitting on the toilet for long periods as well as avoid straining to have a bowel movement, because straining increases the pressure on the venous cushions. More importantly, this habit can turn internal hemorrhoids into external ones.

Drink Enough Water

Adequate hydration from water is essential to having healthy bowel movements. It is recommended to drink plenty of fluids until the urine is clear like water or light yellow.

Eat Foods Rich In Fiber

You can reduce the risk of this condition and maintain regular bowel movement by including more fiber-rich foods in your regular diet (approximately 50 grams a day).

Having this type of diet increases the bulk and softens the stool, that will help you avoid the straining which can considerably worsen this condition.

Note

Also, to avoid excess gas, increase the dietary fiber intake slowly over 10 days.
