Shoulder Pain – Symptoms And Causes

The shoulder is prone to developing pain partially due to its complex anatomy as well as it has the largest range of motion of any joint in the human body. For instance, according to the CDC, about 1.2 million people in the United States visit the emergency room for shoulder pain every year.

Signs and symptoms may include – swelling, weakness, deformity, discoloration (bruising),  and abnormal sensations (like – tingling, numbness, coolness).

There are a variety of reasons why you might be experiencing this type of pain, which include:

Inflammation of the sac of the bursa (it is a small fluid-filled sac commonly found between bones and tendons and over the joints) which frequently allows the tendons and muscles to slide smoothly over the shoulder bones.

Polymyalgia rheumatica – this is an inflammatory condition which causes muscle pain and stiffness, especially in the shoulders and neck. However, it is a rare disorder in individuals less than age 50 and it common resolves on its own over time.

Adhesive capsulitis – it is actually the medical term for ”frozen shoulder,” a condition that causes pain as well as it restricts movement in the shoulder joint. People with adhesive capsulitis come in with severe inability to move their shoulder properly, with varying levels of pain.

A broken bone, like – a broken collarbone (clavicle) or a fracture of the humerus (upper arm bone).

Damage to the tendons and muscles around the shoulder. Also, repetitive motions, such as reaching a cabinet or moving your computer mouse, can lead to this type of pain.

Osteoarthritis – it occurs in the shoulder when the cartilage which covers the joint starts to break down, although it can occur in any joint. Osteoarthritis is the leading cause of disability in Americans. Actually, more than 30 percent of people over the age of 65 suffer from this painful condition.

Having type 2 diabetes mellitus or an overactive thyroid.

Another cause is playing a contact sport, such as – rugby.

Neck Pain – Symptoms And Causes

The ligaments, bones, and muscles of the neck support the head and allow motion. Any inflammation, abnormalities, or injury may lead to stiffness or pain.

It is usually associated with numbness, dull aching, tingling, sharp shooting pain, tenderness, difficulty swallowing, fullness, swishing sounds in the head, pulsations,  lymph node swelling, and dizziness.

Causes include:

Stress – it is one of those things which shows up in almost every list when talking about pain. Also, stress causes the muscles to tense up and contract, that ultimately may lead to stiffness and soreness.

Degenerative disorders, like – spinal stenosis, osteoarthritis, and degenerative disc disease.

Staying too many hours hunched over the smartphone or computer frequently triggers muscle neck strains. Also, minor things, like – gritting your teeth or reading in bed, can strain these muscles, all leading to neck pain.

A day of poor posture most likely won’t lead to this type of pain condition. Nevertheless, regularly sitting in a wrong position, in the long term, will do some damage.

Whiplash – it is an injury sustained during an auto accident. This is commonly termed a hyperflexion and/or hyperextension injury since the head is forced to move forward and/or backward fast beyond the neck’s usual range of motion.

Shoulder Pain – Spiritual Meaning

Shoulder pain is closely linked to our ability to happily bear the hardships of life and what happens to us beyond our will. Those who do not accept their fate and have a negative attitude towards it can experience back and shoulder pain.

This type of pain also indicates that you carry an emotional weight that you can not detach from. Try to focus on solving your emotional problems and finding the balance between your responsibilities and the ones you can share with others.

Neck Pain – Spiritual Meaning

The neck is the place where the desires or the will haven’t surfaced, occurred and triggered the beginning of a physical gesture. They were not yet in relation to the exterior. Thus, the neck represents the point of transition from conceptual (brain, ideas, concepts, desires, wills, etc.) to real (action, achievement, relationship, expression).

Tensions, sufferings or neck stiffness express our difficulty or inability to make desires, ideas, and concepts come true. However, unlike the shoulder strain, which has almost the same meaning, we are in this case at the stage where ideas have not arrived at the “gate” of action. That means we can not make things come true because we think we are not capable.

Omega-3 fatty acids can lower the inflammation levels in your body, thus, partially preventing these types of pain. The best sources of omega-3 fatty acids are chia seeds and flax seeds.
